It is not unknown that owning a cat is less of a hassle and responsibility as compared to owning a dog. They are more self-dependent and require lesser care, attention and nurturing. However, over a course of time, once they get familiar with their owner, they like close physical proximity and attention. Cats thrive on a comfortable and familiar environment. Exploring every nook and corner of the house is important for them to behave in a friendly manner with the members of the house.
However, it is a longer responsibility since some cats can live up to 20 years. They also have a comparatively more expensive taste as compared to dogs and other pets. Cats too, like dogs have some typical behavior patters. Understanding them will help you read your pet better and win their affection.
Cats chatter their teeth very often. If they do so while sitting next to a window and staring outside, it is usually when they’ve spotted a bird. They do so out of frustration of not being able to go out to catch their prey or because of excitement of spotting one or both. Some also believe they chatter their teeth to replicate the act of killing their prey. Either ways, the act of chattering is completely normal; and not a cause of concern for cat owners.
Cat owners might have experienced their cats rubbing their head along some part of their body. This act is commonly known as ‘head butting’. Cats do this to leave their scent over objects to mark their ownership or territory. When they do so on humans, they are marking their territory over them. Bunting and Rubbing are also signs of showing affection, warmth, love and can be seen as a way of saying hello!
When they bring you their kill
As much as it might gross out some cat owners when their feline gets their kill to them dangling from their mouth, it actually shows that your pet considers you to be a part of their family. They want to share their essential skills, i.e. hunting with you and equip you with knowledge too. It can also be seen as a way of them thanking you for equipping them with basic necessities for them to be able to hunt, like food, shelter and water and showing you affection.
Eating non-food items
Its common in dogs to be chewing on all non-edible items while they eat. However your feline might be in a habit to chew on items such as wood, plastic, rope, plants. It is a rare condition in cats known as pica. In a lot of cases, it is a genetic disorder that characterizes the lack of a genetic component. In some cases it could also be due to mineral deficiencies, anemia, thyroid, boredom, or stress. It is advisable for you to consult your vet to get your pet cat examined if they continue to do so for long durations.
You heard it right, cat eyes are a thing! It is typically characterized with a stare down and wide eyes. In some cases it could mean that your pet is simply trying to get your attention. To get a better understanding of what your cat is going through, you could try to pick cues from their body language. It could also mean that your cat is on high alert because of something or someone. In such a case it is advisable to not see your feline directly in the eye, they can see it as a sign of aggression.
On the other hand if they blink slowly while looking at you they are expressing love and showing affection to you. These are known as ‘kitty kisses.’ It is their way of telling you that they love you and trust you. If you reciprocate and throw ‘kitty kisses’ back at them, they would continue doing so.
If you notice your felines ears twitching back and front, it is a sign of agitation and anxiety and probably a good time for you to back up. However if their ears are simply pointed upwards it means they are just being cautious and alert of their surroundings. If you see his or her ear moving from an upright position to a full horizontal position, you should see it as a warning for you to leave him or her alone. Cats like their space and me time more than you can imagine. It is important for you to give them their space for them to come back to you whenever, they would also have higher regard and more respect for you if you give them their space.
